The Treadmills of Life: Building Strength and Preparing for the Journeys Ahead

We’ve all felt it at some point in our lives — that sense of walking on a treadmill, working hard but going nowhere. It can feel frustrating, even hopeless. But what if the treadmill isn’t a dead end? What if it’s the place where we build strength, endurance, and courage for the next chapter?

Typically when people use the analogy of being on a treadmill, they often describe it as walking but going nowhere. However, Ross, my awesome hubster, and I were talking about this recently, and he had a fascinating perspective: maybe the treadmill isn’t about staying in place—it’s about building strength. With every step, you’re training, preparing, and learning endurance, even if you’re not moving forward just yet.

Lao Tzu reminds us, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” But let’s be real—before you take that first step, you need preparation. Whether it’s emotional healing, gaining clarity, or building the courage to act, time on the treadmill is part of the process. It’s not wasted; it’s purposeful. You don’t set out on a hike without your map, gear, or plan. The same is true for life’s journeys. Perhaps the treadmill is a place to prepare for what’s next, to build the muscles you’ll need when you step out into the great outdoors.

But how do you know when it’s time to step off and out of stagnation? How do you go from preparation to action? That’s where many of us get stuck. Fear sets in, self-doubt creeps up, and the unknown feels overwhelming. I get it because I’ve been there, too. Trust and believe!

Ross, as always, pointed out something profound about the topic: the crucial moment comes when you decide to step off the treadmill and onto the path. It’s not always easy. It takes courage to leave a place of control and predictability for the unknown. But that’s where the real journey begins.

For some of us, it feels like we’ve been on that treadmill forever—walking, thinking, planning, but not quite stepping off. That’s where coaching can make all the difference. If you’re ready to move from the treadmill to the open road, I’m here to help.
